A re-imagination of Botticelli’s 15th-century painting of the same name in which a woman must give into her persistent suitor as she succumbs to the power of the divine and sees the painful, tortuous fate that awaits her if she continues her refusal. After this divine encounter, she gives into his desires, an act motivated by pity and fear. The audience of this suspenseful tale sees it played out across four panels, the last being the final marriage scene. Here, we see a modern take on this unfortunate tale of female submission. Nimtz’s work continues to mirror Botticelli's in depicting the realm of suspension between reality and folklore, but begins to diverge through commentary on gossip, destiny, and patriarchal control, weaving in these ideas to redefine traditional, patricentric story telling. We see the artist reimagining this divine tale as the original fourth panel disappears, and the work becomes a female narrated triptych in which she controls her own destiny.

Cora Nimtz is a southern mutt that has made New Orleans her home.
