Synesthesia - the production of a sense impression (i.e.color) relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body (i.e. sound). For some, synesthesia can be as extreme as experiencing color while eating food or listening to music, including Femaissance artist, Erica Lipoff, who created the pieces "the history of pause timing," "alone, together," & "the other side of the wall from my bed" for Femaissance: Primavera. “I was listening to a lot of the Icelandic rock band Sigur Ros. The really cool thing about their music is that they put together syllables to make meaningless words in their language.” Impressions of her unique response pattern to music, Erica’s stunning watercolor cutouts serve as sensory responses to an experience most humans cannot fathom. In doing so, Erica too pieces together broken fragments to create a foreign visual vocabulary in her own language, incidentally rooted in the profound meaning that stems from the unique experience within her own world.

Erica Lipoff sees expression as respite, examining the intersection between color, form, and feelings. As she begins to explore themes pertaining to able-bodiedness and access, she believes that freedom is fundamental in creativity and in healing, and seeks to create a sense of wellness and support through figures and lines.
