Shelby Little is an artist living and working in New Orleans. She is a graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and the University of New Orleans. In addition to painting she also creates drawings and has a line of hand painted clothing. Shelby Little’s paintings are vibrant and colorful, veiling subject matter that can be dark or uncomfortable. Her work is distinctly southern, including bright azaleas, giant palm fronds, and banana leaves. Her paintings begin as gestural acrylic paintings, building towards thick areas of decidedly placed oil paint, glitter, or gold leaf. She uses her closest relationships as a point of departure, collaging together photos and drawings to create her composition. These collaged situations transform into surreal southern landscapes.
